Redesignation as WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing and Patient Safety

The World Health Organisation has redesignated the Institute for Nursing Science and Practice at the Paracelsus Medical Private University as WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing and Patient Safety.

We are proud to have served as a WHO Collaborating Center for Nursing Science and Education from 2016 to 2023, with a special focus on Palliative Care Nursing. Building on this foundation, we are honored to be redesignated for a further four-year term (2024–2028), with a new focus on Nursing and Patient Safety.

Upon request by WHO, the institute will...

1. Provide country assistance in strengthening the capacity of nurses to secure patient safety.

The Institute of Nursing Science and Practice in Salzburg will collaborate with WHO by developing a series of online training modules. These modules will focus on the roles, responsibilities, and competencies of nurses in ensuring patient safety. Additionally, the institute will provide technical support to WHO during three to five webinars, as requested.

The institute will also contribute to WHO's work by reviewing and offering feedback on a set of indicators developed by the organization. Furthermore, it will provide expert input, including presentations and constructive feedback, to help shape the program for a workshop aimed at Government Chief Nurses and Chief Medical Officers, thereby supporting WHO’s broader initiatives in nursing and patient safety.

2. Strengthen the role of nurses in designing and delivering health promotion services.

The WHO CC in Salzburg will review curriculums, as selected by WHO, that may inform its work to improve the content and methodology for enhancing nurses' and midwives' capacity to engage patients in measuring health outcomes. The institution will deliver a draft technical brief for WHO`s consideration on integrating principles of patient engagement in the initial training of nurses and midwives.

3. Support WHO's activities on nursing and midwifery education and research in patient safety.

The designated institutions will design and draft a two-week training package for WHO`s consideration, review, and approval on patient safety for nurse educators which will include an online and onsite component.

WHO's Role

WHO will provide technical guidance to the institution throughout all stages of this activity. The organization will identify the countries that will participate in the course developed by the institution and will determine the scope and criteria for the training package.

WHO will be responsible for organizing the online and onsite facilities, as well as securing external speakers for the course. Additionally, the WHO will oversee the modalities governing the training, including the selection and confirmation of participants.

Furthermore, WHO will ensure that the educational and training resources meet its quality standards and will provide the framework for both the online course and onsite training. WHO will review and approve all deliverables to ensure they align with WHO rules and policies.

WHO will exclusively liaise with Member States and may use all deliverables as deemed appropriate.
